Frequently asked questions about your first visit

How do I enter the Gym?

If a member does not have the membership card with them they will not be allowed entry into the facility. If your card has been lost/stolen a new card can be purchased, during staffed hours for $10. You cannot access the facilities without a member access card.

What if I need help while I'm in the Gym?

We offer free new client consultations to the machines available by appointment. Stop by to front desk to schedule yours during staffed hours or email us for available appointment times.

Are there time limits for using the cardio equipment?

To be courteous to all members, we ask that you please not linger on the equipment as other members may be waiting to use that equipment. Please try not to monopolize the equipment or weights. If there is a wait list for the use of certain pieces of equipment please limit your use to 45 minutes at a time to allow others use of the equipment. Should any conflicts arise over equipment use, please let management resolve them.

What if someone is using the piece of strength equipment I want to use?

You have a few choices. If you are doing a total body workout, you can move to the next machine and come back when the piece of equipment is free. You can ask how many sets the other member has left and either “work in” or wait until they are finished. To share equipment with another member or “work in”, simply ask, “May I work in?” While that person is resting, you can do your set. When you take your turn, finish your set or exercise in a timely manner. The other member will take their turn while you are resting between sets.

What is proper weight room etiquette?

As a courtesy to other members, and to ensure everyone’s safety, we ask that you please re-rack your weights after use. While the facility does not supply chalk it is allowed provided you clean up any residue after use.

What should I wear to workout?

Wear comfortable, breathable fabrics and running or cross-training shoes. We recommend that you always bring a lock, water bottle and sweat towel. Outside street shoes are not permitted in the workout area as they cause unnecessary damage to the fitness machines.

Frequently asked questions about being a member of the Gym

How old do I need to be to join?

Members ages 16 and 17 can join the facility with written parental consent. Any member ages 14 and 15 is considered a junior member and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian at all times.

Can I try the gym before joining?

You can try the facility before you purchase a membership, providing you are 18 years of age or older, by signing up for our daily membership of $8.00. Daily membership is valid only during staffed hours.

Can I cancel my membership?

A 1-year annual membership runs for 12 months. You can’t cancel it during this time. If you’re not sure about committing for a year, you can buy our prepaid monthly membership to try it out, or do a single day pass. Your auto pay (Electronic funds Transfer) memberships are a 1 year contract that is automatically renewed for another year if you don’t cancel it at least 1 month before the end of the contract. We will send you a reminder before the end of the contract.

Can I freeze my membership?

You can freeze your membership for medical reasons. Just bring us an official letter from your doctor and you can freeze your membership for up to 6 months. You can’t freeze your membership for reasons other than medical.

Can I delay the start of my membership?

Yes, for example, if you’re already tied into a contract at another gym that requires you to give a notice period, you can delay the start of your membership with Universal Health & Fitness by up to one month during the joining process to allow for a seamless transition between your memberships.

Can I bring a guest?

If you would like to bring a guest to the facility with you, there is an $8 per visit guest fee. Guest are only permitted in the facility during staffed hours.

Will I be shown how to use the equipment?

Are there changing facilities and lockers?

Yes, and hairdryers, showers and outlets. You can purchase a padlock for day use lockers from our vending machine.

Does the facility include sauna, steam, spa and pool?

Our goal is to give you world class equipment at an affordable rate. That’s why we’ve cut out distractions and additional amenities you don’t use so you can simply focus on your fitness. We offer a quality exercise and fitness facility with no ‘frills and fuss’ and therefore have opted not to have a sauna, steam, spa and pool. That keeps the costs fantastically low, along with our carbon footprint.

Do you provide parking?

Parking is available in front of the building with additional parking located on the side of the building.

Security

Is is safe for me to come at night?

Yes. Our doors remain locked at all times, even during staffed hours. Every person that enters the facility must swipe their access card. Non members are not allowed in the facility outside of staffed hours. Our facility has 24 hour surveillance that is reviewed daily to ensure non members are not being let in the gym, and current members are abiding by our facility guidelines. If a member brings in someone outside of staffed hours or opens the facility door for an individual without access their membership will be subject to termination, no exceptions.

What if I lost my gym access card?

You cannot access the facilities without a member access card. Members who need to obtain a replacement access card can purchase one for $10 during our staffed hours.

Do you offer WiFi?

Wi-fi is available at our facility at no extra cost to our members! The network provides free Wi-Fi access to members. To access the Wi-Fi, users must visit the Wi-Fi settings menu on their device and select the following SSID: UHF Member Wi-Fi. Once you have selected the network you will be presented with a landing page asking for your name, email address and phone number. Enter these details, accept the terms and click ‘Go’ to connect.
